Our Work Experience Program lets you spend a few days at one of our facilities. You will work alongside health professionals to see what a career in health could look like. Placements are short, supervised and focused on health careers in roles that are in demand.
Currently, we are offering one High School Work Experience Program in Nuclear Medicine.
Nuclear Medicine High School Work Experience Program
Nuclear Medicine Scientists (also called Technologists) take images of the body using small amounts of radioactive material. These images show how the body is working, not just what it looks like. They help doctors find, monitor and treat disease.
If you are considering a career in Nuclear Medicine this three-day placement at Sunshine Coast University Hospital will allow you to see what our Nuclear Medicine Scientists do. Activities include:
Observations:
- Nuclear Medicine (NM)
- Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
- Radiopharmacy
- Bone Mineral Density (BMD)
- Stress Test
Tutorials:
- Nuclear Medicine (NM)
- Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
- Hand hygiene
- Image processing
- Physics
Practical sessions:
- Hot Lab – preparation, handling and storage of radioactive materials (no radiation involved in your activities)
- Cannulation practice (on a training arm, not on patients)
All activities are supervised, and none involve patient contact.
Nuclear Medicine Scientist – Embedded Student Program (NMS-ESP)
During your placement, you can ask us about the NMS-ESP. This program is available after completing high school through the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), where you can study Nuclear Medicine while completing clinical training with Queensland Health.
How the program works
Applications open in June 2026 for the following placement periods:
- 1 September – 3 September 2026
- 10 November – 12 November 2026
- 24 November – 26 November 2026
If your placement is during the school term, you will be away from school for those three days. You will need to organise this with your school.
If you are successful, you will attend one three-day supervised placement where you will observe real procedures and complete hands-on (non-patient contact) tasks.
Before your placement starts, you will complete some mandatory online training and a site induction so you're ready to go on day one.
At the end of the three days, we will give you feedback and you will also be able to tell us about your experience.
